How to take photos for a clean capture

Photograph one model from different sides, in soft even light, against a plain background — up to 4 photos.

Walk around it

Take 3 or 4 photos from different sides, roughly level with the model rather than looking down on it. A few angles beat many from one side. Capture takes at most 4, so choose your best.

Soft, even light

Natural or soft light is best. Hard shadows can read as shape, and a shiny brick under a bright lamp can come back as a hole.

A plain background

A table top or a sheet of paper works well. A patterned cloth confuses the outline. Some contrast helps: a light model on a dark surface, or the other way round.

Fill the frame

Get close, and keep the whole model in every shot. Keep your hands out of the picture: they get baked into the model. Keep the model still between photos.

One thing at a time

One object, filling the frame, against a plain background. A photo with too much in it can be refused as too complex, and a refusal like that is refunded.

A photo of a person, for a minifig

Minifig from a photo takes one photo, not several. One person, facing the camera, with head and shoulders in the frame and nothing covering the face; even light without hard shadows; and the outfit in view, because it becomes the figure’s torso and legs.
